Royal Festival Hall
Triple E Ltd. In conjunction with draping specialists J&C Joel designed, manufactured and fitted 42 acoustic elements into the newly refurbished Royal Festival Hall – London’s most iconic Modernist building.
The project includes the supply of four concertina banners and 38 acoustic roller blinds, plus ten chain driven tapestry tracks to which the Hall’s famous Hilary Bourne designed tapestries have been re-attached following restoration. The movement of all these elements is integrated into the Stage Technologies automation control system.
Royal Northern College Of Music, Manchester
Drape and stage machinery specialists J&C Joel and Triple E have teamed up to supply and install 8 large motorised Venetian acoustic banners to two large rehearsal rooms in the new £4.5 million Centre for Excellence in Teaching & Learning building at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester (RNCM).
The project was managed for J&C Joel by Tony Griffiths, who comments, "This was a great challenge to get 'just right', but great teamwork with David Edelstein and the Triple E crew made the process really smooth. It's a good illustration of the dynamic partnership between J&C Joel and Triple E on projects like this".
The Roundhouse, Camden
J&C Joel/Triple E has manufactured and installed several curtain and tracking systems in the newly refurbished high profile Roundhouse performing arts venue in London's Camden Town.
J&C Joel/Triple E was asked onboard by John MacKinnon, Technical Manager of the Roundhouse, with a brief to provide a bespoke track and drape system that would withstand the rigors of touring productions whilst being mindful of the general Roundhouse aesthesis.
Royal Horticultural Halls
The Royal Horticultural Halls, Westminster, have been the home of the annual ABTT (Association of British Theatre Technicians) show since 1992, and provided a ready list of potential suppliers for managing director René Dee when he was planning a major £1.2m refurbishment of the entire venue.
Lawrence Hall, the newer of the two halls, looks like a cross between a grand Victorian station and a cathedral - and has the acoustics to match. With its great transverse arches and the natural light that floods in through tiered side windows and domed roof lights as well as the end wall windows, the hall is also difficult to black out and it was this initially that led René to Triple E.
Radio Days
The former National Institute for radio broadcasting on place Flagey in Brussels is a beautiful Art deco listed building. Triple E supplied 10 acoustic banners with motorised control mounted in the attic space above the concert room.
The banners were dyed specially to complement the colour scheme of the auditorium and offer the management greater programming flexibility as the reverberation time of the hall can be varied between 1.7 and 2.3 seconds serving both acoustic and amplified sound.
Millfield School, Somerset
Drapes specialist J&C Joel and Triple E has completed the installation of a set of motorised acoustic drapes for the new Music School and Concert Hall at Millfield School in Street, Somerset.
Millfield is one of the UK’s most famous independent schools. Set in the fabulous undulating Somerset countryside overlooking Glastonbury Tor, it’s renowned for the sporting achievements of many of its pupils.
The opening of the new Music School and Concert Hall demonstrates Millfield’s ongoing commitment to the Arts, and incorporates a 350-seat concert venue, rehearsal areas for all their ensembles, six classrooms, twenty five teaching/ practice rooms, recording studios and specialist percussion rooms.
The Sage, Gateshead
Triple E track the acoustic curtains at The Sage Gateshead
The Sage Gateshead, the stunning new £70m home for live music in the North of England, is at the heart of the regeneration of Tyneside. Funded by the largest Arts Lottery grant outside London, The Sage Gateshead is the first building for the performing arts to be designed by Foster and Partners and aims to be an inclusive, open-for-everyone music venue. It includes two concert halls, the Northern Rock Foundation Hall for rehearsal and performance and a 25 room Music Education Centre designed to pioneer a fresh approach to musical discovery.
Such a venue must offer a wide range of music, from classical pieces, choral works and 18th century chamber music to folk, jazz, rock and pop and solo artists - and the acoustic requirements for each form are completely different. With variable acoustics among the highest priorities in the design of The Sage Gateshead, both the two main concert halls, nominally called Hall One and Hall Two, and the rehearsal space are equipped to the highest international standards. Theatre Projects Consultants was responsible for the technical design, working with acousticians Arup Acoustics.
